Dhaka-At least 16 people traveling to a wedding reception in western Bangladesh were killed in lightning and several others, including the groom, were injured, officials said.
Local government official Sakib Al-Rabby said the bride was not in the group when the incident occurred in Shibganj in the Chapainawabganj district on Wednesday.
Al Rabbie said the group had just left their boat to evacuate because of a thunderstorm when they were attacked.
The area is about 150 miles (245 kilometers) northwest of Dhaka.
The annual monsoon is currently underway in Bangladesh. More than 200 people, mainly in the field, are killed by lightning each year.
Experts say that worsening air pollution has contributed to the increased frequency of lightning strikes in the country.
