25-year-old Guatemalan soccer star dies of cardiac arrest during training

Guatemalan soccer player Marcos Menardo reportedly died of a heart attack during a training session on January 3rd in preparation for the new season.

A 25-year-old central defender playing with Club Deportivo Marquense, based in San Marcos, Guatemala, collapsed during practice and was taken to the hospital after undergoing emergency CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) at the scene of the incident.

The death of Menardo, a fan favorite and recent champion of the First Division of Soccer, was reported after being transferred to the Esperity Dades Hospital in San Marcos.

Club President Hernan Maldonado, Told ESPN Menald was a “young, dynamic and cheerful person.”

“It was around 11 o’clock [a.m.] They called me to let them know that Marcos had fainted in training, “Maldonado told the multinational sports channel. “They transferred him to a support center where he did everything he could, but unfortunately he was confirmed dead.”

“It’s very strong and shocking because you lose not only your players, but your friends,” he said. “God has his plan and purpose, but unfortunately we have death.”

Menald joined Club Deportivo Marquense in 2018 and reportedly had previously complained of dyspnea.
