Port-au-Prince in Haiti — A preliminary magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Haiti on Wednesday near an area that was still struggling to recover from the deadly quake that struck last year.
There were no immediate reports of death or serious injury. Frankel Maginaire, a reporter for Jeremy’s Radio Caribes, told The Associated Press that he was slightly injured when people panicked and started running. Others say that the walls damaged by the 2021 earthquake collapsed.
A spokesperson for the Haiti Civil Defense Agency was not immediately asked for comment.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quakes were concentrated 11 miles (18 kilometers) north of Jeremy at a shallow depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers). Jeremy is at the tip of southern Haiti.
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck southern Haiti in August 2021 killed more than 2,000 people and destroyed or damaged tens of thousands of homes. Dozens of people remain in temporary shelters and little help as the gang continues to control the highways leading from the Port-au-Prince capital to the southern part of Haiti.
