A California man tragically died Thursday after being hit by a teenage driver after pulling over to help a family of ducks cross the road.

Casey Rivera, 41, was killed after being hit by a car on Stamford Ranch Road and Park Drive in Placer County, California. police said in a statement.

A statement said Rivera was getting out of his car to “rescue a duckling at an intersection” when a teenage girl hit him with her car.

The 17-year-old remained at the scene to cooperate, and police said there appeared to be no criminal negligence and that criminal charges were unlikely. According to NBC News. But officials added that an investigation was ongoing.

Witnesses said Rivera was on her way back to the car after getting the duck safely out of the car when it crashed. NBC affiliate KCRA reported.

A 12-year-old boy named William, who was present at the scene, said people were cheering and clapping for Rivera.

“He got out of the car and chased the ducks away and everyone was clapping because he was so nice,” Williams told KCRA. “The little baby ducks were all struggling so he helped them over the curb and then walked over to the front of our car.”

The boy said he did not know where the car had come from. “All I remember is the sound and then he flew across the intersection,” he told KCRA. “One of his shoes and socks was right in front of our car.”
