A JetBlue passenger put a straight-edge razor to a woman’s throat during a flight on Monday, federal prosecutors said.
Meryl Darrell Fakrell, 41, was charged with assault after flying from JFK Airport in New York to Salt Lake City International Airport in Utah.
He was also charged with carrying weapons on an airplane. Press release from the Department of Justice.
DOJ said Fackrell put a razor to the woman’s throat while she was watching a movie. The blade was one to two inches long.
According to the account, he was sitting next to her, moved his hand in front of the screen, and told her to pause the film.
According to the DOJ release, she took off her headphones and realized he had a blade “a few inches from the skin in the throat/neck area.”
Authorities said the woman’s husband was also sitting in the same row and stepped to the front of the plane for help.
The woman then “rushed into the aisle” and the man “grabbed her by the shoulders and tried to stop her,” the press release said.
JetBlue did not immediately respond to an insider’s request for comment.
Various federal agencies were investigating how they were able to bring razors on board. The New York Times reported.
