A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands region, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said Monday.
According to the EMSC, the depth of the quake was 10 km (6 miles).
The quake occurred in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, 2,960 km (1,839 miles) east-northeast of Punta Arenas, Chile, the EMSC added.
According to the US tsunami warning system, there was no threat of a tsunami immediately after the earthquake.
