Rome-Italian police say the body of a 21-year-old American man was withdrawn from the Tiber on Thursday and investigations were underway to determine the cause of death.

Elijah Oliphant’s family in Dallas, Texas, reported that he went missing on Tuesday after he left the hotel and never returned. They arrived on a holiday the day before.

The body was found in part of a river near the Trastevere district, famous for its nightlife and popularity with foreign students.

The family announced an appeal on social media on Wednesday, posting a photo of a smiling young man after voting in the November 2022 US elections. The appeal made his age 22 years old.
