A man recently evicted from a Houston rental facility shot dead three of them early Sunday morning after setting fire outside the complex to lure out other residents, police said.
and Press conferencepolice chief Troy Finner said police were called around 1 a.m. regarding the fire and shootings.
Gunmen armed with shotguns began firing at five tenants who had fled their homes due to the fire, Finner said. Two of the victims died at the scene and one died in a hospital. did, he said. Two other men are still hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The police chief said the eviction notice probably “triggered” the shooter.
“Maybe that was the trigger point for him, but I don’t know,” he said. “It’s part of the investigation.”
Finner said firefighters were the first to arrive on the scene, but had to evacuate when gunmen began firing at them. spotted the gunman and fatally shot him.
“I’ve seen things I haven’t seen in 32 years,” Finner said at the conference. We don’t know at this point, but we want the community to come together.”
Authorities have not released the names of the shooter or victims. Authorities said the perpetrator was in his 40s and the victim was between the ages of 40 and 60.
Police and the district attorney’s office are investigating the shooting.
