Sapporo, Japan-Argentina, the two-time Olympic men’s soccer champion, was stunned by Australia 2-0 at the opening round of the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday.
At the first Olympics since 2008, Australia led with a Lachlan Wales tap in the 14th minute at Sapporo Dome.
Marco Tirio won on the 80th, just one minute after getting off the bench.
Australia is the leader in Group C, ahead of Egypt and Spain, who drew 0-0 in other games.
Argentina won the Olympic gold medal in 2004 and 2008. Australia’s best show was fourth in 1992.
