The Canadian Ministry of the Environment is urging the Yuconers to stay cool as heat waves raise temperatures and dozens of new wildfires burn.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a heat warning today in many areas where temperatures are expected to reach 28 degrees Celsius and nighttime minimums of 13 degrees Celsius.
The warning applies to Whitehorse, Old Crow, Dawson, and other areas throughout the central, southern, and western regions of the territory.
This was after daily temperature records were set at Haynes Junction, Carmax, and Tezlin yesterday, with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius.
Wildfire information dashboards in the area show that about 30 new flames have been recorded in the last 24 hours.
Part of the Klondike Highway remains closed due to smoke from the fire of Crystal Creek, which has grown to over 1,500 hectares.
The evacuation warning issued on Sunday for Stewart Crossing, about 15 kilometers from the wildfire, remains valid.
