China says coal plays a less dominant energy role

Taipei, Taiwan (AP) —China, the world’s largest coal user, said on Tuesday that fossil fuels did not play a significant role in its energy mix and the country plans to build a new coal-fired power plant. It is large that said not to use.

Comments by Li Gao, Director of Climate Change, Ministry of the Environment, China Last week’s climate summit Xi Jinping Jintao of China to reduce emissions in cooperation with the United States.

“In the past, it (coal) was the main source of power. In the future, it will play a role in providing flexibility to the power grid,” he said.

“And we still need a certain amount of coal … but we don’t develop coal on a large scale. It’s very clear and tightly regulated,” he added.

Li acknowledged that China is still building new coal-fired power plants, but emphasized that they, unlike traditional coal-fired power plants, emit less than previous power plants. Climate experts have long advocated a ban on new coal-fired power plants. This will be an important step.

China derives about 60% of its electricity from coal and is the world’s largest source of greenhouse gases. During the Trump administration, the United States used China’s emissions as an excuse to take no action, and in the past China pointed to US historic emissions as a reason to resist action.

Beijing has previously set a non-fossil fuel energy target to account for 20% of the country’s total energy consumption by 2025, which will require further investment in solar and wind energy. ..

Germany and China agreed to strengthen cooperation on Monday Fighting climate change, Two people discussing the use of coal and how to reduce it.

Xi announced last year that China is aiming to be carbon-neutral by 2060 and reach peak emissions by 2030.
