Ohio police officers shot dead a black teenage girl while answering a phone call attempting to stab him.

The shooting took place on Tuesday at around 16:45 local time (20:45 GMT) in the state capital, Columbus. The Columbus Dispatch newspaper reported.

Columbus police later produced body camera footage of the incident, showing that several were attacking people before the girl was shot several times.

Investigations are underway and authorities are urging locals to stay calm.

“This afternoon, a young woman died tragically. We don’t know all the details.” Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther tweeted.

“We will share as much information as possible as it becomes available,” he added.

An angry crowd later gathered on the scene, US media reported.

The shooting in Columbus happened just before A jury found a former police officer convicted of murder over the death of African-American George Floyd on the streets of Minneapolis last year.

Derek Chauvin, 45, was filmed for more than nine minutes on his knees on Mr. Floyd’s neck when he was arrested last May.

Widespread footage has sparked global protests against racism and the use of excessive force by police.
