MEMPHIS – Two young children died and their mother was seriously injured after two family dogs attacked a baby and toddler outside their home in West Tennessee.
The assault took place outside the family’s Memphis-area home on Thursday, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Kirsty Bennard, 30, was seriously injured when she tried to intervene in an attack on five-month-old boy Horace Dean and two-year-old girl Lily Jane. family told USA TODAY on Saturday.
Jeff Gibson said, “After the attack started, she tried to protect her by putting her body over Lily.”While she was lying on Lily, both (the dogs) attacked her. I started.”
The two children were pronounced dead when authorities arrived at the home, the sheriff’s office reported.
The mother was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, officials said.
Benard has been discharged from the hospital, Gibson said Saturday.
It was not immediately clear what caused the beating.
John Morris, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, told USA TODAY on Saturday that the case is an ongoing and active investigation. didn’t mention.
Gibson said the fistfight lasted about 10 minutes.

The family had pets Cheech and Mia for over eight years without incident of violence. Kelsey Canfield, her mother’s best friend, told Fox News.
“I can promise those kids were her world. If there were any danger signs, she wouldn’t have had those dogs near her kids,” Canfield told the outlet. “The kids were everything to them, and they have a really long journey ahead of them.”
