Even if Getty daily new COVID cases hit record highs and hospitals are full, epidemiologists have probably reached a surprising consensus. Yes, the latest Omicron variants of the new coronavirus are bad. But that could have been worse. Even if the number of cases surges, the death toll is not — at least not to the same extent. Omicron is highly contagious, but generally less severe than some older variants. “Lineage” is a scientific term. I was fortunate. But that luck may not hold.Many of the same episode
