Floods hit Rijeka, Croatia after torrential rains

A man has died in flooding after storms and heavy rain hit a port in Croatia’s northern Adriatic Sea, officials said Thursday.

On Wednesday night, a torrent of water drenched Rijeka, flooding homes and flooding town squares and streets.

Officials said it rained in just two hours, as much as it normally rains in a month.

Emergency workers had to remove a group of children from a playroom in Rijeka because water started to come in, according to firefighter Mladen Scrak.

Local schools and dozens of other buildings were damaged by the floods, he added.

Police found the man’s body under the car that had been forced to stop on one of the streets where traffic had stopped due to the storm.

The exact cause of death has yet to be determined, police said.
