Florida couple driving to Key West ‘Terrorized’ and shot When he unwittingly stopped at an intersection where illegal street racing was taking place, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Happened around 4am Sunday, March 19, at Lehigh Acres, The sheriff’s office reported that two victims survived with help. Lehigh Acres is located about 140 miles south of Tampa.
Investigators say the shooting occurred when the couple towed a boat and stopped at the intersection of Milwaukee Boulevard and Homestead Street.
“As they approached, the car club blocked off the entire intersection and flocked to the street race,” Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said at a press conference.
“The mob broke away from the large group, surrounded the victim’s truck and boat, and began beating and kicking the vehicle. Several suspects jumped onto the truck and boat. Victims were terrified.”
A video posted on social media shows the couple trying to flee when one ran to the driver’s side window and “fired a pistol directly into the truck.”
the victim suffered serious injury, an official said. The victim’s identity and circumstances have not been released.
Three arrests were made in the incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
The suspect, identified as Armando Cruz, 17, of Cape Coral, was charged with “two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated artillery, shooting a vehicle, firing a firearm in public, and possession of a firearm.” indicted. At a press conference, Marceno called the incident a “disgusting act” and promised to seize the cars of those involved in the race.
