Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the hospital after being shot

During Prime Minister Abe’s speech, a reporter on the scene said he heard two consecutive bangs. Local media reported that he was shot on the left side of his chest and apparently his neck. Local media also reported that authorities had arrested the 41-year-old. Political violence is rare in Japan, where armed regulations are strict. Prime Minister Abe reportedly gave an election speech outside the station prior to Sunday’s general election. Fumio Kishida reported that he suspended the campaign after shooting and returned to the capital, Tokyo. The Japanese government said it had no plans to postpone the elections on Sunday. Prime Minister Abe is Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, who served two terms ago. He resigned in 2020 because of his illness, but he dominated his ruling Liberal Democratic Party and continues to dominate one of the major factions.
