Four Supreme Court justices have opted not to attend President Biden’s meeting. State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday night.
Biden greeted five 9 judges of the High Court — John Roberts, Elena Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, Ketanji Brown Jackson — just before he begins his speech, according to video footage of the event. Clarence Thomas, Sam Alito, Sonia Sotomayor, Neal Four Gorsuch judges were absent.

The president especially spent a short time with Jackson, the newest Supreme Court justice and the first black woman to sit on the court.
“America’s story is a story of progress and resilience,” Biden began his speech. “Always keep moving forward. Never give up. It’s the only story of every nation. We are the only nation that has come out of every crisis and come out stronger than when we faced it. That’s me.” That’s what we’re doing again.”

The speech is Biden’s second State of the Union address since taking office in January 2021, and the first he has given since Republicans regained control of the House majority.
