Knoxville, Tennessee (AP) — A woman in Tennessee said she had reported to police about a physical battle involving her daughter and girl’s boyfriend before being shot deadly by police in a high school toilet. ..
Regina Perkins said she called police last Monday as 17-year-old Anthony J. Thompson Jr. Knoxville News Sentinel report.
According to police, Thompson had a gun in Austin-East Magnet High School in eastern Knoxville late Monday. Shot dead in a confrontation with an officer In the bathroom.
According to Perkins, Thompson and his junior daughter have been dating for nine months. The girl called Perkins from the Vice-Principal’s office early Monday and said she was upset and wanted to quit school early. Perkins said she allowed her to sign out and go home. There, the girl showed that she and Thompson were involved in a conflict during the discussion.
Perkins said he tried to contact Thompson’s mother before calling the police but was unsuccessful. A policeman came to her house to make a statement. Perkins also exchanged text messages with Thompson, stating that police officers were coming to school.
“Anthony knew I had called the police and reported it,” Perkins said.
Shortly thereafter, Perkins saw a helicopter over the school and said he knew the school was blocked. Police responded to reports of possible shooters about 15 minutes before the school was fired at 3:30 pm, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Perkins said he hopes he has never called the police.
“I’m sorry, and I never intended anything to happen to him,” Perkins said. “We are mourning. My daughter is mourning the loss of her first love. In this case, we also want an answer and justice.”
A school resource officer was injured in a bullet during the shooting, but the TBI said it was not due to a student’s gun, and police officers may have been shot by police. The resource officer has been shot in the leg and is recovering after surgery.
A local prosecutor refused to request the mayor of Knoxville to release a video footage of the shooting, saying that the public would one day be able to see body camera evidence.
The shooting occurred when the community was released from off-campus gun violence and three other Austin East students died this year.
