Greek village, monastery evacuated as a house due to fire

Loutraki, Greece — A large wildfire in Greece damaged houses on Thursday, tearing through rugged woodlands and urging evacuation.

Fire officials said eight water-drop planes and three helicopters were involved to contain the flames about 70 km (45 miles) west of Athens, outside the resort town of Lutraki.

Overnight and early Thursday, authorities issued evacuation orders for six settlements in areas with many villas. Two Orthodox Christian monasteries have also been evacuated.

No injuries have been reported.

Wildfires are common in the hot summers of Greece.
