South Korea is facing the worst day of a pandemic amid a surge in Omicron

South Korea celebrated its worst day of the pandemic on Saturday, reporting 112 deaths in the last 24 hours as it tackles a wave of coronavirus infections caused by fast-moving Omicron mutants. Healthcare workers have diagnosed 166,209 new cases. This approached Wednesday’s 1-day record of 171,451, showing an increase of more than 37-fold from mid-January 1-day levels when Omicron first emerged as the country’s dominant stock. Omicron so far seems less likely to cause more serious illness or death than the Delta strains that hit the country in December and early January.
