Millions urged to evacuate as Florida Gulf Coast prepares for Hurricane Ian

Florida Gulf residents emptied their grocery shelves, boarded up their windows, and fled to shelters. Hurricane Ian approached Wednesday, with strong winds from a tropical storm hitting the southern tip of the state hours before it was predicted to make landfall in the United States. It was expected to make landfall in Florida at night, south of Tampa Bay, somewhere between Sarasota and Naples, and become a potentially deadly Category 4 hurricane. Maximum sustained wind speeds approached 120 mph (195 km/h) and was rated a Category 3, although the storm was expected to intensify.
