India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought 36 new ministers into power with the largest cabinet reshuffle since he came to power in 2014.
At least 12 ministers, including the IT and health ministers, have resigned prior to the remodeling to give way to their colleagues.
The new cabinet will have 77 ministers from the current 52.
The move precedes elections in key states, including the important battlefields of Uttar Pradesh.
The new cabinet was announced in the government’s criticism of its response to the pandemic and the economic downturn. The second wave of Covid-19 killed thousands and even destroyed small towns and cities.
Among those sworn on Wednesday is Jotiraditiya Cindia, 50, a former opposition lawmaker who turned to Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last year. Salvananda Sonoir, 58-year-old former Assam Prime Minister, and former Parliamentary leader Narayan Rane.

The prominent name has been removed
Health Minister Harsh Vardhan is the most prominent minister who resigned on Wednesday.
Barudan has been widely criticized for dealing with pandemics. In early March, he declared the country “late” in a pandemic. It took less than a month for the second wave to hit India, the overwhelming hospitals and even the crematorium.

At least six ministers from the politically important state of Uttar Pradesh have been appointed to the cabinet. BJP wants to maintain Uttar Pradesh next year. A defeat could bring great embarrassment to Mr. Modi, a state-elected parliamentarian.
Modi has also invited more female ministers this time around. The former cabinet had four female ministers, but now there are 11 and seven new members.
