Iran, US Warship in First Tensioned Middle Eastern Encounter of the Year

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (AP) — US and Iranian warships had a tense encounter in the Persian Gulf earlier this month. This is the first such incident in about a year in the wider regional turmoil over Tehran’s tattered nuclear trade. ..

A video released by the Navy showed that a ship under the command of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Defense Corps was cut in front of the USCGC Monomoi, and a Coast Guard ship sucked an engine and stopped suddenly on April 2. It was.

Cmdr said the guards did the same with another Coast Guard vessel, the USCGC Langer. Rebecca Lebarich, a spokeswoman for the 5th Fleet based in the Navy’s Middle East.

Iran did not immediately admit the incident, so there were no injuries or damages.

“U.S. crew members issue multiple warnings via bridge-to-bridge radio, five short blasts from the corner of the ship, and Haas 55 (in Iran) responds to bridge-to-bridge radio inquiries. While they were doing, they continued to operate dangerously, “Rebarich said. “Approximately three hours after the United States issued a warning and took defensive measures, the (Iranian) ship maneuvered away from the US ship, opening the distance between them.”

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the incident.

According to Rebarich, this interaction was the first “safe and unprofessional” case involving Iranians since April 15, 2020. However, she said Iran had largely stopped such incidents in 2018 and almost throughout 2019.

In 2017, the Navy recorded 14 cases described as “unsafe or unprofessional” interactions with the Iranian army. We recorded 35 cases in 2016 and 23 cases in 2015.

Most maritime incidents involve the Revolutionary Guard, which reports only to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Some analysts believe the case is partly intended to put pressure on President Hassan Rouhani’s administration after the 2015 nuclear deal. This includes the 2016 incident in which Iranian troops captured and detained 10 US crew members who had wandered into the territorial waters of the Islamic Republic.

The incident occurs when Iran negotiates with the world powers of Vienna over Tehran and Washington and returns to the 2015 nuclear deal. It also follows a series of incidents across the Middle East resulting from the shadow war between Iran and Israel, including attacks on regional shipping and sabotage at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility.
