Las Vegas police have identified a boy found dead in the forest 10 days ago and issued a murder warrant to arrest his mother.
Authorities used DNA to identify the child, formerly known only as Little Zion, as Liam Hasted, 7, who lives in San Jose, California. They are currently looking for Samantha Moreno Rodriguez, 35.
The mother and son left California on the blue Dodge Caliber on May 24 and drove to Southern California and then to Nevada. Moreno Rodriguez was last seen at a motel in Denver on May 31st.
Liam’s cause of death has not been revealed, but police said Liam was the victim of the murder. A week ago, a hiker met his body and was thrown into the trailhead.
Police initially published a sketch of the child, but as a result, the woman falsely claimed that the unidentified child was her own. Her son was on a camping trip with his father and brother. It turned out that.
A few days later, a San Jose woman worried that she hadn’t seen Moreno Rodriguez or Liam for two weeks saw a sketch of “Little Zion” and noticed something similar.
The woman, a family friend, called the San Jose Police Department and contacted the Las Vegas Police Department. Later, a Vegas detective flew to San Jose to get Liam’s clothes and pillows.
The Criminal Institute then confirmed a match between the item’s DNA and the boy found in the forest.
Lieutenant Ray Spencer of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said he had to tell the boy’s father, who reported missing on June 1, that he had died.
“It’s a heartbreaking conversation,” Spencer said at a press conference on Monday.
