of Austin Police Department (APD) arrested A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder after a shooting in east Austin. This didn’t stop Yaseen Naz’s defense from having longtime customers coming.
Officers responded to a shooting at a Shell gas station at 4509 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 11:14 pm on Sunday, police said.
When police arrived, they found 42-year-old Marquis Demps with a gunshot wound to his body in a car in a gas station parking lot. Police said Demps died at the scene.
Through investigation, detectives determined that Demps was involved in an altercation with Shell employee Nas.

After the altercation, Demps walked into the store and smashed things before leaving, police said. It is not known what caused the disturbance. Nas then allegedly shot Demps.

According to court documents, Demps walked into the store and said, Caused a disorder of words, which changed into a body.
“There was some sort of altercation in the store and that’s how it all started,” Austin Police Department Alexandra Parker said early Sunday morning.
According to court documents, Nas told police that Demps had swung a knife at a worker, so Nas picked up a gun and told Demps to leave. Instead, according to court documents, surveillance video shows Demp vandalizing the store.

Naz’s father showed FOX 7 the damaged merchandise and display cases in the store. He says Demps broke the glass at the counter and tore up the computer and credit card machine.
Longtime customer Michael Dunn said:

“He doesn’t deserve it. He doesn’t deserve first-degree murder,” Dunn said. “In some ways, it feels like self-defense, not self-defense.”
Nas is being held in Travis County Jail on $1 million bail and has been charged with first-degree murder by the office of Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 22nd.
Austin has struggled with violent crime since the city council passed police funding cuts by about a third in August 2020.
