Canada has pledged $500 million to the Ukrainian military as part of efforts to isolate Russia on the world stage.

Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie announced the funding today at the G20 summit in Indonesia. Some countries have said they want to maintain good relations with Russia.

This commitment means that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive surveillance and communications equipment, fuel and medical supplies.

This $500 million pledge is on top of the same amount announced by the Liberal Federal Government in this spring’s budget.

Joly did not disclose when the funding will occur.

Canada also announced new sanctions against 23 Russians who Jolly said had violated the human rights of opposition leaders.
