MEXICO CITY — Authorities in central Mexico said Friday they found a strange holiday-season package at a local airport, with four human skulls shipped to the United States.

The Mexican National Guard said police were called to the airport in the city of Queretaro after X-rays detected strange shapes in the cardboard boxes.

The box was being shipped from the city of Apazutingan in southern Michoacán to an address in Manning, South Carolina.

When security opened the box, they found four human skulls wrapped in plastic and aluminum foil.

Security officials said that regardless of how the skulls were obtained or whether they were for medical research, Mexico’s laws regarding the handling of corpses could be violated.

Michoacan is one of Mexico’s most violent states, and the city of Apatzingan has long been ruled by the Viagra drug cartel.
