Melbourne — An open-pit coal mine operated by Coronado Global Resources in central Queensland, Australia, killed miners early Sunday, a company spokeswoman said.

Curragh Coal Mine, located in the Bowen Basin, about 800 km (497 miles) northwest of Brisbane, Queensland, has been temporarily suspended for investigation.

“A full investigation of the accident is underway and Coronado is working with the Queensland Police Service, the Department of Natural Resources, Mining and Energy, and other authorities,” said a spokesman for an Australian-based metallurgical coal manufacturing company. ..

Queensland’s Resource Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) spokesperson is an independent regulator of worker safety and health in the state’s resource industry, working overnight at a coal mine near Blackwater. Said he was fatally injured.
