A Portland man charged with hate crimes for hitting a “Japanese” with his five-year-old father

In Portland, Oregon, a man was charged with prejudice on suspicion of attacking a man and his five-year-old daughter, believing they were Japanese. Victims from California were biking along the East Bank Esplanade around 3:45 pm on Saturday. Dylan J. Kesterson, 34, approached them and said, “I commented on his perception that they were Nikkei,” Portland police said. After his remarks, Kesterson allegedly began beating the head of a 36-year-old man.
