Health Canada is considering the first request to approve the COVID-19 vaccine for very young children.
The Moderna application is for children from 6 months to 5 years old.
According to the company, in a study of 6,700 children, the vaccine was safe and showed antibody responses similar to those found in adults.
A single dose for children under 6 years is 25 micrograms. This is one-fourth the size given to adults and teenage children and half the size used by children aged 6 to 11 years.
Health Canada received a Moderna application this morning after making a similar request to the US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday.
The trials were conducted primarily during the wave of Omicron mutants, and the vaccine was less effective in preventing infection in children than previous trials in adults.
