New South Wales urgently calls for electronic tagging of sheep and goats

The New South Wales (NSW) Government announced on July 20 with the Australian Minister of Agriculture and sheep and goats in fear that an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) could wipe out parts of the agricultural sector. We are proposing a more advanced electronic identification tagging system.

Currently, Australian cattle can be tracked via electronic tagging under the National Livestock Identification System. However, the industry still relies on mob-based systems to track the movement of sheep and goats.

Mob-based tracking systems use visual identification instead of electronic identification to enable more efficient and accurate tracking of livestock.

New South Wales Agriculture Minister Dugard Sanders said the state government is calling on the federal government to further strengthen its biosecurity measures to keep the foot-and-mouth disease crisis away from Australia.

“Indonesia’s foot-and-mouth disease crisis is a significant threat to the livestock industry, costing the Australian economy $ 80 billion and potentially shocking communities over the next few years,” Saunders said in a statement.

“Individual traceability of sheep and goats is very important in the event of an emergency illness and benefits the entire supply chain.”

“An effective national traceability system is essential to enable New South Wales to continue to export more than $ 1 billion of lamb each year.

Travelers were advised to throw away the thong

Farmers also urged travelers from Indonesia to bottle the thongs before arriving to protect Australian farms.

Fiona Simson, president of the National Federation of Farmers, said wearing new shoes during the holidays was no more a national service act than ever before.

She said that those who throw away old shoes will be given a voucher for new shoes.

It also needs to be developed “in hand” with the industry to ensure it is practical and cost effective.

Sheep Producer Australia CEO Bonnie Skinner supported the move to implement a stronger sheep traceability program.

“Rapid and reliable tracking of livestock plays an important role in responding to emergencies,” she said.

“The faster the animal is tracked, the more likely it is to control the outbreak of the disease and minimize its economic and social impact.”
