At the height of Australia’s Covid lockdown (one of the toughest in the world), a wave of anti-lockdown protests has emerged. These protests have seen tens of thousands of people take to the streets to demand that governments lift restrictions.
The reaction from the government was a mixture of indifference and brutal police tactics.
Caught in this was an Australian woman named Monica Smit, a citizen journalist and founder of an organization called Reignite Democracy Australia.
Monica was repeatedly arrested, fined, and sentenced to 22 days in prison, even though she had government papers that gave her permission to report on the protests.
I met Monica while in Amsterdam and she told me her story.
