Purdue student murdered in dormitory Wednesday morning, roommate detained

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — Twenty-year-old Varun Manish Cheda of Indianapolis died early Wednesday morning at his home. McCutcheon Hall According to Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello and the Purdue University Police Department, she is an apparent murder victim.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Chedda’s roommate is a suspect and is in custody, Purdue University spokesman Tim Doughty wrote in an email.

The suspect, a roommate, called police around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday to report the killing.

Purdue police declined to comment on the facts, and the media referred to Doty. He said there was no danger to the Purdue community because the suspect was in custody.

Students who live close to the scene of the crime will be moved to separate rooms, and counselors will be available at the university for those who need them, said Trevor Peters, a communications specialist at Purdue University.

Purdue University President Mitch Daniels issued a statement Wednesday.

“This is such a tragic event that you can imagine happening on our campus, and our hearts and thoughts go out to all those affected by this horrific event.

“As the president of Purdue University and as a parent myself, I can assure you that student safety and security is our number one priority on campus,” Daniels said. “Purdue has always been a very safe place. , compared to cities with a population of Purdue (approximately 60,000 overall), very little violent and property crime occurs elsewhere.

“Statistics like this take no solace on a day like this. The death of a family member on our campus and at Purdue affects each of us deeply.”

Daniels concluded her official statement by thanking those who took the time to care for each other at Purdue University.

The last murder on Purdue’s campus was January 14, 2014. Cody Cousin Killed Andrew Bolt in the Electrical Engineering Building. The cousin pleaded guilty, was convicted, and committed suicide in prison in late 2014.
