Putin declares “special military operation” in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in Ukraine in a speech late Thursday.

In a television speech, Putin said military operations aimed at protecting civilians and demilitarizing Ukraine, in response to threats from Ukraine.

He said Russia had no plans to invade Ukraine and Ukrainian troops “should put down their weapons immediately.”

Putin also said that foreign attempts to thwart Russia’s actions would lead to “the results they have seen so far.”

Immediately after Putin’s speech, explosions were reported not only in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, but also in other cities. KharkivMariupol, Odessa.
