A massive search is underway for the missing swimmer after a group of people jumped off Martha’s Vineyard’s ‘Jaws’ Bridge late Sunday night, officials said.
Around 11:20 p.m., a total of four people entered the waters of Edgartown, the Coast Guard said. Two swimmers were able to reach shore.
As of Monday morning, one male swimmer has not been found. “After the man jumped, he did not surface,” Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.
One of the swimmers who went missing overnight was recovered this morning.
Coast Guard crews at Woods Hole and Air Station Cape Cod are assisting the local fire department and police in their search.
Famous for its appearance in Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1975 thriller, the American Legion Memorial Bridge is located on Beach Road. It connects Edgartown and Oak Bluffs.
A young man jumped off a bridge last summer and had to be airlifted to hospital after sustaining serious neck injuries, Martha’s Vineyard Times reportOfficials told news outlets they thought the man was jumping off part of a bridge that spanned a deeper channel.
