Rape and sexual violence have been in the spotlight since the 2012 gang-rape and brutal killing of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus. The attack sparked mass protests, prompting legislators to mandate the creation of speedy courts specifically for rape cases and harsher penalties for those convicted of the crime.
