Sony Xperia 1 III review: finally filled the spec sheet

Sony Xperia 1 III review

There are more and more mobile phone lenses, because manufacturers can meet the user’s photography needs at different focal lengths, but it is obvious that a digital camera is just a lens, because the middle is the element of “zoom”. Sony uses black technology to enable the latest Xperia 1 III to achieve a mobile phone lens that switches focal lengths without sacrificing size and experience, providing a unique experience. But in addition to this, Sony Xperia 1 has come to the third generation, and the hardware specifications have finally been filled, which can be on par with other competing products on the market and is no longer picky.

The following is the editor’s experience with this third-generation Japanese flagship, Sony Xperia 1 III, which not only highlights Sony’s black technology, but will not be compared, see how they have been running for three years of One Sony crystal products.

Exterior design

Upper right: Xperia 1 / Upper left: Xperia 1 II / Lower: Xperia 1 III

The name Sony Xperia 1 continues to the third generation, which represents long-term continuity, and this feature can also be seen in the appearance of the phone. Xperia 1 III is still that long mobile phone, no wonder it will be joked as a “TV remote control”, but as the editor of Sony TV users, I can confirm with you that their TV program remote control is even more slender. ! After entering the Xperia 1 generation, Sony mobile phones are slowly becoming able to connect with the world. One of the things that can be experienced is that the frame on the front of the screen is getting thinner and thinner, because the length of the Xperia 1 third generation has gradually changed. Short, but the screen size is the same 6.5 inches, so it can be proved that the frame is gradually getting smaller. In Xperia 1 III, even if the perforated screen is not used to store the front selfie camera, at first glance it can already achieve a certain degree of “full screen” effect.

The ultra-thin “forehead” is the limit without a special-shaped screen

Turning to the back of the phone, the Xperia 1 III tested is a purple version, which is also a logo color scheme for Sony phones in recent years. It is worth mentioning that in the third generation, Sony finally used a matte body to solve the fingerprint collection problem of the past two generations of bright body. However, the matte purple is really difficult to show color, so the dark environment may only You will see a dark body. The matte treatment is not only on the back of the machine, but the middle frame of the Xperia 1 III also has the same design to enhance the sense of unity. However, even if the surface treatment is different, it still inherits the problem of slippery. If you are not careful, the whole phone will slip and fly out. The machine I borrowed for testing has already kissed the ground many times.

The anti-trend Google Assistant button

Seeing the middle frame, the buttons placed on it are also a bit different from the past models. The physical buttons are concentrated on the right side, the volume button, the power button that doubles as the fingerprint reader, the Google Assistant button (!) and the shutter button. Yes, the GA button, which used to be standard on Android phones and was later cancelled, suddenly returned to Xperia 1 III, and the official did not explain or explain it, which is really curious. Especially in Greater China, the application rate of Google Assistant is not considered popular, so it may be a superfluous measure for us. Fortunately, this button, which is not very commonly used, has no customizable capabilities. It is still hidden in design. It is flat with the middle frame, and it is usually fine and it will not be touched by mistake.

The next button is the shutter button, which has been a feature of Sony’s Xperia flagship phone since ancient times. In 2021, there will be a little change in details, that is, the surface has a diamond pattern, and the area has become a bit larger. When you press the shutter, you will feel more impressed. The other parts of the fuselage are the same, the USB-C port is at the bottom of the machine, and the top of the machine is the only 3.5mm headphone jack. Finally, of course, there will be an IP68 waterproof and dustproof body, and the screen glass is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, and the back of the machine is Gorilla Glass 6.

Audiovisual experience

21:9 screen ratio can have full screen effect when playing movies

Speaking of late and fast, let us enter the first black technology applied to Xperia 1 III. The accomplishments of Sony Bravia TV are reflected in this Xperia 1 III. In terms of specifications, Sony used a 6.5-inch 21:9 4K HDR OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate this time. After lonely self-admiration and chasing 4K, the prodigal son returned to join the market demand for high-fluency display capabilities. But in this way, the display capability of Xperia 1 III has also become the strongest on the market. In actual viewing, because the 120Hz refresh rate upgrade is obvious, it is more emotional compared with the previous generation. Then there is a touch sampling rate of 240Hz, which is especially noticeable for friends who can play mobile games, and it is also a signal that Sony has finally kept up with market demand.

In my own opinion, the Xperia 1 III’s picture is very detailed and the colors are full. It’s just because of the super narrow and long ratio of 21:9 that the mainstream content of the real world will be displayed on the Xperia 1 III. It is smaller than a mobile phone of the same size. However, only when watching the theater version of “Rurouni Kenshin” on Netflix, the 21:9 screen ratio can be used, and the full screen display is cool.

Personalized 360 Spatial Sound effect can be used with other brand headphones

For the audio part, because Xperia 1 III retains the 3.5mm headphone jack, everyone’s Hi-Res wired headphones can be directly applied to the mobile phone, plus support for LDAC encoding, so whether you are listening to high-resolution audio from any source is allowed. However, Sony has also worked hard on the speaker. It is said that because of the structural change, with the design of the speaker that sounds forward, the volume will be increased by 40%. When I watch a movie at home, the editor plays the sound directly on the mobile phone. The special effects of the sword and shadow are really three-dimensional.

Xperia 1 III unique three lenses, four focal lengths

Another embodiment of Sony’s technology is in the camera part. The Xperia 1 III is equipped with a 12MP three-camera combination, but it provides a total of four focal lengths, which are 16mm super wide-angle, 24mm wide-angle, 70mm 2.9 times telephoto and 105mm 4.4 times telephoto. To paraphrase Sony’s statement, these focal lengths are for professional photographers, so they correspond to the focal lengths most commonly used by monocular camera users, and they will have the same experience of “changing lenses” when using them.

In other words, smartphones with optical zoom are not Sony’s first. Looking back, ASUS, which has a harder core, has implemented a single-lens 3x zoom focal length on the ZenFone Zoom launched in 2015. It is based on a 10-element lens group. (Also launched in 2014, it’s not clear whether it’s a DC or a mobile phone)v). However, the technology at that time could only use 1/3″ CMOS, and the aperture value was only f/2.7-f/4.8. It was only in a sufficiently light environment to get a good image. Moreover, the ZenFone Zoom machine was thick. At 11.95mm, the mobility is much lower than that of the Xperia 1 III, which is only 8.2mm thick, but this is all 7 years ago.

The telephoto camera switched from 70mm to 105mm focal length animation

Coming to 2021, Sony’s approach is to set the periscope lens to “switch” between the two fixed focal lengths of 70mm and 105mm, so that the lens activity involved in the middle is reduced. Although the complexity is low, considering the limited space to achieve this effect, it is still amazing. Therefore, the editor will not dislike the black screen problem of Sony phones when switching focal lengths. I think it is good to change the lens, and it is also cooler (?). In terms of specifications, Sony’s 1/2.9″ CMOS is not much larger, but the aperture value is f/2.3 (70mm) and f/2.8 (105mm), so it can still be used for telephoto in a darker environment. Just imaging is not good enough.

Since Sony has some experience in professional cameras, it is not surprising that they will introduce related user interfaces into mobile phones. In the previous generation, they started to pre-load a “Photo Pro” camera app that mimics the Sony mirrorless camera interface in addition to the native camera app. However, having two native camera apps in a mobile phone is too cumbersome, so in Xperia 1 III, it is integrated into only one Photo Pro app, and then the easy-to-use “Basic” shooting mode is added to it.

Even though Sony has combined the efforts of the camera team, the manual adjustments that can be done on the camera of the mobile phone are common ones such as white balance, ISO, shutter speed, and exposure. However, Sony’s uniqueness is that it provides autofocus functions with “speedy”, “tracking power”, and “specific object recognition”, and all four focal lengths can be applied. Specifically, it is able to identify and track objects, and then perform AF/AE calculations at a speed of 60 times per second, tightly “biting” the target for continuous focusing, and the effect is comparable to professional monocular AF-C.

There have been several paragraphs on specifications and theory, and of course imaging comes next. When shooting with a 1/1.7″ CMOS wide-angle camera, the colors are very real and the three-dimensional effect is also very good. When shooting little furry children, with the camera’s animal recognition and focus tracking capabilities, it can be very easy to shoot. Create a camera with accurate focus and sharp imaging.

The performance of the two telephoto ends is also very good, the imaging is very solid, although the color is relatively light, the three-dimensional impression is still good, and more importantly, there will be high-speed focusing. It can be seen that the telephoto camera does not affect the imaging due to the movable mechanism.

System functions

Dual window mode: YouTube (top) / web browser (bottom)

Sony didn’t have too much ink on the system, but pre-loaded an Android 11 system with a slightly modified UI. The main selling point continues to be the emphasis on the dual-window mode in response to the 21:9 long-ratio screen, which can simultaneously display two images with sufficient height on the Xperia 1 III screen. The effect is indeed that it is easier to see the content inside, but the overall size is still smaller because of the narrow ratio of the screen. Young people are fine, but those with bad eyes are afraid that it will be more difficult.

The game mode that can be seen on many Android phones has appeared in Xperia 1 III, which is called “Game Enhancer”. This app has appeared in the previous Xpeira 1, providing common but practical functions such as performance configuration and interruption prevention. At the same time, it can also define the physical camera shortcut as a switch. Since it comes to Xperia 1 III, it has a high screen refresh rate of 120Hz, so there will be new options in the adjustment project to correspond.

HS power control

The editor agrees with the so-called “HS power control”. This function limits the charging function and prevents the device from heating up during games. It will multiply with the charging temperature, and add fuel to the fire to make the phone “heat up”. Even so, in the face of the enthusiasm of Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, Sony is completely helpless. As soon as I opened “Bang Huai 3rd”, Xperia 1 III was hot. So stopping charging can also be regarded as a means of injury control, so that the phone is not accidentally overheated.

The next thing is quite magical, which can be regarded as another Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound function of black technology. Friends who can use Sony mobile phones will surely start with Sony headsets, especially the true wireless headset WF-1000XM4, my favorite! In the exclusive Sony Headphones|Connect, you will get personalized after scanning your ears 360 spatial sound settings. But the most wonderful thing is that this setting can actually be applied to other brands of headphones, bringing the same wide and natural sound field. In my opinion, it can enhance the listening experience more than Dolby Atmos!

Specification performance

This time Sony Xperia 1 III finally catches up with other competitors on the market, allowing their true flagship models to be equipped with 12GB as standard, and the models are divided only by storage space. The core specifications are Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, 12GB RAM, and a 4,500mAh battery that supports PD charging. Among our commonly used running score tools, we can get scores that meet expectations. Of course, the fuselage will inevitably heat up. When measured with a thermometer, the surface temperature of Xperia 1 III easily exceeds 46 degrees, which is also the normal performance of S888 (alas).

Sony can be regarded as a relatively unique presence in the current smartphone market. It neither blindly catches up with the specifications, nor does it casually hand over the licensed products. Each product is representative and shows a certain aspect of black technology. However, as a consumer, before seeing the uniqueness, it is easy to take some specifications as the barriers to entry when buying a mobile phone among the sea of machines. Therefore, in the past, Sony’s flagship phones always had some shortcomings in some parts, and it was easy to be screened out first.

Coming to Xperia 1 III, the core specifications have finally reached the threshold of a true flagship phone, so everyone has no excuses to be picky. Built on a solid foundation, all black technologies can be better viewed by everyone, such as the first-ever zoom segment camera, extremely fast focusing, excellent screen, and wonderful sound effects.

The editor believes that Sony Xperia 1 III is a true flagship model in 2021 that is worth a try. After all, there are not many manufacturers that spend time to build their own functions under the red sea outside and blind piles of materials. Let alone the function that comes out is practical.
