South Korean star Song needs facial surgery before World Cup


LONDON (AP) — South Korean captain Son Heung-min undergoes surgery for facial injuries World Cup in Qatar.

Son, one of the biggest names in Asian football, was helped off the pitch in the first half. Tottenham’s Champions League match in Marseille Tuesday after shoulder to face.

Tottenham announced on Wednesday that Son will undergo surgery to “stabilize a fracture around his left eye”.

The Premier League club did not say how long Son is expected to be out.

“After the surgery, my son will begin rehabilitation with the medical staff, and we will update the supporters accordingly,” the team said.

The World Cup kicks off on November 20th and South Korea will be one of the last teams to play their first group match against Uruguay on November 24th. Portugal and Ghana are also in Group H.

Tottenham have games against Liverpool and Leeds before the Premier League is suspended for the World Cup.
