Sudan agrees to hand over accused Darfur war crimes

Fatuben Suda (left) meets Musama Hadi, Governor of South Darfur, Sudan, on May 31st.

This decision will be made after former ICC prosecutor Fatuben Suda (L) meets with officials in Sudan.

Sudan has stated that it will hand over a former civil servant sought after on suspicion of war crimes in the Darfur region to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Sudan has not yet nominated the individual to be handed over.

The ruler of the country had already promised to surrender former President Omar al-Bashir He was in power during the conflict, but he remains in large numbers.

The war in Darfur has caused one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world in recent years.

At least 300,000 people were killed in a conflict between rebels and government forces that began in 2003. Millions of other people were detained in refugee camps from their homes.

Sudan’s decision came weeks after ICC retired prosecutor Fatuben Suda visited the country and urged its leaders to surrender all applicants, including Mr. Bashir.

He was the first person to be prosecuted by an international court for genocide charges. After a massive protest expelled long-time leaders from power in 2019 He was sentenced to two years in prison for corruption but was not imprisoned for his age..

Other former civil servants that the ICC wants are former Defense Minister Abdellahim Muhammad Hussein and former Interior Minister Ahmad Harun.
