Tanzania says three people were killed in a shootout near the French embassy

Dodoma, Tanzania-Tanzania police say three people, including two police officers, were shot dead in a conflict near the French embassy in Dar es Salaam.

Police inspector general Simon Shiro told reporters that the armed man was a foreigner and police believed he was from Somalia. Shiro also warned that the attack could be related to a jihadist rebellion in neighboring Mozambique.

The US embassy warned citizens to avoid the area with a security alert.

The conflict arose shortly after President Samia Suluhu Hassan spoke to security officials elsewhere in the city, the commercial center of Tanzania.
