Warning: Episode 5 of the Marvel show “Hawkeye” has a big spoiler.
-
Director duo Bart and Bertie analyzed how the dinner scene with Kate and Jelena came together.
-
The director said Florence Pugh loved hot sauce and came up with the idea of putting it on pasta.
“”Hawkeye“Amber Templemore Finlayson and Katie Elwood (collectively Bart and Bertie) unpacked the macaroni and cheese dinner scenes of Kate Bishop and Jelena Belova from the latest episode, and how the stars improvised during the shoot. I made it clear.
Eagle eye fan tuned to Wednesday episode You’ve probably noticed that Jelena’s dietary choice is a callback to her young self who told her mother she wanted macaroni and cheese for a “Black Widow” supper.
The director said that thanks to the writer, this Easter egg was part of the scene from the beginning.
“These shows have great writers, which often make our job easier, where they sit down and have this conversation,” said Bart. insider In an interview on Thursday.
The director said they sometimes find themselves “catch up” with all the details, but super fans always make connections because “they live with these characters”.
“So, of course, it had to be there,” Bart added. “The new layer we brought was that it became such a focus of the scene, there were many improvisations, and it really, really made the scene.”
Archer Kate and the assassin Jerena, who debuted the MCU on separate projects this year, met for the first time in episode 4 on a rooftop combat scene involving Clint Barton / Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Maya Lopez / Echo (Araquacox). ..
Jelena, sister of Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), visits New York to kill Clint. Jelena finishes the episode speedily, reappears in this week’s episode, and appears in Kate’s apartment without notice.
When Kate notices an intruder, she reaches for the closest item, a bottle of hot sauce, and throws it at Jelena. Jelena cleverly captures it and gives it a cheerful “hello”.
“I was looking for something I knew Kate would throw as a weapon,” Bertie added, “I won the day because the hot sauce was really catchable.”
Besides being used as a weapon, Jelena takes the seasoning and puts it in the “really delicious” boxed macaroni and cheese she cooked.
The director said the character decision was Pew’s idea, and the actress in “Midsummar” had no problem eating meals between the multiple takes that occurred during the shoot.
“Florence was like,’Well, hot sauce has to be on macaroni and cheese,'” Bertie recalled. “I said,’Oh, that’s a big choice, because you now have to eat it in multiple takes.'” And she said, “I’m in, I’m in it.” Thing. And she did. “
Bertie said Pew “loves hot sauce,” but Steinfeld isn’t a big fan. So they incorporated it into the dialogue.
While the two are eating macaroni, Jelena confirms that Kate is over. That way she can add hot sauce to it.
In another part of the scene, Jelena looks for a fork so that she can divide her meal. She found only one tool for Kate to answer, “I’m alone.”
Jelena grabs the plastic fork she finds, scolds Kate, and tells her, “It’s not cutlery.”
At that moment, Bertie said, “I found only one fork because it was all the props people set up, and I was looking around for another fork.”
Bert added that because of COVID-19, the stars couldn’t share the fork, so they contained a plastic one.
Steinfeld and Pew are newcomers to the MCU, but the stars are well known in Hollywood.
Steinfeld received critic praise and Oscar nominations for her role in the 2010 movie True Grit. Pew is known for his films in movies such as “Lady Macbeth,” “Midsommar,” and “Little Woman.”
“They are contemporaries,” Bert said of the stars. “They are these incredible actors of their generation.”
Bert said there was “obvious relief” given the luxury of overseeing two talented actors who could get the viewer’s attention just by sitting at the dining table.
“It’s a long scene and you’re grabbed, so you see the magic that happens,” Bart said. “There is no moment like” Oh, I’m going to the bathroom. ” You want to see what happens to them. “
“They didn’t work together before the scene,” Bart added. “But their characters met in this kind of equal position. Chemistry can happen because they are so generous and give each other enough to stay at the moment.”
