Three dead as building collapses near Kenyan capitalmore missing

Nairobi, Kenya—A woman and two children were killed Monday when a skyscraper collapsed outside the Kenyan capital. Rescuers searched the family through the rubble and reported them missing.

According to Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi, four people, including a child, were rescued after the collapse in Kirigiti. But “we know there’s a man and his wife there, and it’s likely they have children.”

Such building collapses are not uncommon in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya.

“The buildings that were being built here were done in a very substandard manner,” the governor said. “This man built without a permit. He came and applied for a permit, was told to comply with some conditions, he disappeared and continued building.”
