Worshipers in Tokyo participate in the annual ice water purification ceremony at Teppozu Shrine. This is an event to pray for the health of the new year. Participants stretch out to warm up and dive into a pool of cold water with huge chunks of ice. New Year’s events have a history of nearly 70 years in the community. “I hope the coronavirus pandemic is about to end,” says 74-year-old Yoshiko Shibata, the oldest participant.
