Strong typhoons cut off electricity and cause floods in northern Philippines
Officials said on Sunday that after a strong typhoon struck the northernmost islands of the Philippines, some communities were flooded, left unpowered and expelled thousands of people. Typhoon Chantu, which was once classified as a Category 5 storm by the Philippine Meteorological Service, has weakened after powering the northernmost region, including the Batanes Island Group, on Saturday, the Meteorological Service said. “This is one of the strongest typhoons I’ve felt,” said Dennis Ballesteros Valdes, who lives in the town of Subtan, Batanes.
