Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it was “absolutely unacceptable” for Canadian representatives to attend the Russian Day party at the Russian embassy in Ottawa, adding that it should never happen.

According to a Globe and Mail report, Yasemin Heinbecker, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary of Protocols for Global Affairs Canada, attended the party on Friday.

During the question on Tuesday, interim conservative leader Candice Bergen pressured the prime minister on why the Ukrainian government sent a representative “to the enemy’s house to enjoy champagne and caviar.”

Bergen says Trudeau wants to apologize to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“This problem did not occur,” Trudeau said in a telephone conversation with Zelensky about Canada’s support for a confused country today.

Foreign Minister Melanie Joly told the House of Commons on Monday that she was angry with the party and her department apologized.
