Two police officers guarding Pakistan’s polio team are shot dead

Peshawar, Pakistan (AP)-On Wednesday, motorcycle shooters shot dead two police officers assigned to protect polio vaccination workers in northwestern Pakistan, and then fled, police said. ..

The attack occurred in the Mardan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, when police officers returned to the police station after guarding the polio team, said senior police officer Adnan Azam.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack that occurred two days after Pakistan launched a national campaign to eradicate catastrophic illness by the end of the year. According to Azam, the search for the assailants was ongoing and all personnel engaged in polio activities were safe.

Pakistani militants often target polio teams and police assigned to protect them, claiming that vaccination campaigns are a Western conspiracy to infertile children.

After Nigeria was declared virus-free last year, polio is endemic in only two countries in the world, Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan.
