U.S. Blackhawk helicopter makes an emergency landing in downtown Bucharest

Bucharest — A U.S. military Blackhawk helicopter made an emergency landing on Bucharest Street on Thursday, destroying two public streetlights and shutting down traffic, with no casualties.

The helicopter was part of a group of six who were rehearsing prior to the Romanian Air Force Day and an event commemorating the end of the Romanian military presence in Afghanistan on July 20-21. Witness footage shows that he suddenly lost altitude and was flying low over the car until he landed near a downtown roundabout that the traffic police had passed.

According to traffic police, helicopters have shown to have technical problems.

Romania, a NATO member since 2004, hosts NATO command centers and US ballistic missile bases.

“We are working with a Romanian partner to resolve the situation and will provide more information as it becomes available,” the US Embassy said in a statement.

A military prosecutor was at the landing site investigating the cause. Traffic will be restricted until the helicopter is removed.

The Defense Department has canceled all aircraft participation in the two scheduled ceremonies, a spokesman for the Ministry, Brigadier General Constantine Spinu, told Reuters.

“Both ceremonies will be held, but no military aircraft will participate,” Spinu said.
