Ukrainian troops bombarded the village of Alexandrovka in a rebel-controlled area of the Donetsk region on Saturday, injuring a civilian, according to officials in the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk.
“Our brigade brought peaceful citizens from the city of Donetsk with a gunshot wound on their left thigh,” trauma surgeon Yuri Ponomarev told The Associated Press.
Alexandrovka is located next to the front line and people suffer from regular bombardment.
Valentina, a local inhabitant, said she had injured her leg during tensions in 2015 and told AP that bombings were on a regular basis.
Another local, Svetlana, said civilians were accustomed to bombardment and were no longer afraid.
“They fire at us every day. There are snipers working, flying drones and shells,” Svetlana said.
Russia has gathered an estimated 100,000 troops near Ukraine.
After the expulsion of the Kremlin-friendly president in Kiev in 2014, Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and boosted a rebellion in the eastern industrial center of Ukraine.
The battle between Ukrainian troops and Russian-backed rebels has killed more than 14,000 people, and efforts to reach reconciliation are stalled.
