Washington (AP) —The Biden administration has approved a $ 100 million support agreement with Taiwan aimed at strengthening its missile defense system as Taiwan faces increasing pressure from China.
The State Department announced on Monday an engineering and maintenance agreement for China to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Beijing sees Taiwan as a state of rebellion, has not ruled out the use of force to integrate the island with the mainland, and has escalated the flight of fighters over Taiwan’s territory in recent months.
The support agreement aims to help Taiwan maintain its existing air defense missiles and the advanced US-made Patriot missiles that Taiwan has acquired.
The Ministry of Defense of Taiwan thanked the United States for the approval of the agreement.
